A day with a pro photographer

Well it’s not exactly one day, more like half day with him. I woke up early last Friday because I need to meet up with a professional photographer at the crack of dawn. My office had engaged him to take a few photos for our company profile, something that is different from our regular company profile. I was asked to bring him to Bundu Tuhan (Puncak Borneo) and Mesilau Resort at Kundasang area.

  
I was of course excited, I got to meet a pro photographer, maybe ask a few tips from him, and maybe some of his experience. We met at my office near Iramanis Centre at about 6 in the morning, to get there early before the scenery is covered by mist. Because it was drizzling a bit that morning, we stop for a while at Tamparuli to have breakfast.
  
Did I mention who he was? He is Tommy Chang, previously with Asiaweek. I started my conversation with what camera he is using. He use Nikon D200, but I didn’t bother to ask him what and how many lenses he owned. I did ask him what brand of camera to his opinion is the best? I felt a little bit dumb with his answer because it is true, it’s not about which brand, it’s more to the operator. If you are keen to take photo, the knack of taking photo will come later. Experiment on any type of angle to get the best shot, later on. Oh by the way, he said the new photographer who started with digital SLR is more to photo technician because they can still edit their photo in the computer. Real photographers are the one who can capture the moment without even using the computer to make the photo perfect. Those who ever used a film before are the real photographer. They just shoot hoping the picture will come out perfectly. Can I be considered as a photographer? I’ve used film on my first SLR before (belongs to my dad actually) and I was also taught to develop a Black & White film in a dark room. It was kind of cool to be able to do it last time.
 
He did take a look at my puny Nikon P5000, he comment that my camera is still good for capturing a good photo. All I need to add is just a wide angle adapter for my lens and maybe a small flash add on if I want to take dinner function photo.
 
We also talk about a lot of things; Sabah Photography Club, world economies, Israelis and Palestine, the American economy, George W. Bush, Sabahan and West Malaysian to name a few. It was a very fruitful outing to me. I hope we can meet up and exchange ideas again in the future. This is what I manage to take when I was with him. After the photo shoot, I met up with my colleague to have lunch and I take snap my colleague finished lunch.
